Network Security

In recent studies it has been found that security is the most important issue facing business owners from a technology perspective. The reason for this is because lack of security leads directly to lost productivity. There are items related to security to be addressed: physical security, network security, file level security, and internet security. Physical security is the most basic of these and includes restricted access to server rooms and site security such as access controls and video surveillance. Physical security is designed to protect physical assets. Next and most commonly talked about is network security, this type of security is employed by the use of routers, firewalls, and other security appliances such as Unified Threat Management (UTM) devices. The job of these devices is to keep the network secure by preventing unauthorized access and keeping intruders out.

These devices vary in size, price, and features however the role is the same, to restrict access from the unsecure internet to the secure local network. One of the most often overlooked security related items is file level security, this is the process of restricting different data to only certain users or groups and auditing who made changes to existing files, this helps avoid accidental file deletion and reduce the risk of loss from curious or disgruntled employees. The last security item is internet security, this is the process of securing and restricting internet access.

The internet is an extremely beneficial tool however when used improperly can cause drastic loss of productivity and allow worms and viruses to enter the network. Securing internet access is becoming more common with the ever increasing amount of lost productivity and threat mitigation caused from internet base viruses and worms. Many Unified Threat management (UTM) devices are designed to address both network security and internet security and can include features such as intrusion prevention, network address translation, and protect from viruses and spyware.
